Phonics: How Letters Become Words

๐ŸŽฏ Learning objectives

After this article, you should be able to:

  • Understand the 9 steps of the phonics path
  • Know the sounds of C, A and T
  • Blend three sounds into a word

Reading is a code โ€” and phonics is the key. Each letter carries a sound, and when you push the sounds together they snap into a word. Here is the whole journey, using the most famous word in phonics: CAT.

The 9-step phonics path

  1. ๐Ÿ”ค Letter โ€” meet the letter: C
  2. ๐Ÿ”Š Letter sound โ€” C says /k/ ("cuh", like in cat)
  3. ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Example image โ€” picture the sound: ๐Ÿฑ
  4. ๐Ÿ” Sound repetition โ€” say it again and again: cuhโ€ฆ cuhโ€ฆ cuh!
  5. ๐Ÿงฉ Blend sounds โ€” push the sounds together: cuh + ah + tuh
  6. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Form word โ€” snap them into place: C-A-T
  7. ๐Ÿ“– Read word โ€” say it fast and smooth: CAT!
  8. ๐Ÿง  Recall โ€” cover it up. What sounds were in CAT?
  9. ๐Ÿ† Quiz โ€” check what you know.

The CAT example, full size

C โ†’ /k/   ("cuh")
A โ†’ /รฆ/   ("ah")
T โ†’ /t/   ("tuh")

Push them together: cuhโ€ฆ ahโ€ฆ tuhโ€ฆ โ†’ C-A-T โ†’ CAT! ๐Ÿฑ

Why blending matters

Blending is the moment reading is born. The sounds slide into each other โ€” c-a-t becomes "cat", not "cuh-ah-tuh". It takes practice, and every child finds it at their own speed. The trick is repetition: same sounds, new words, every day.

Practice with audio in the C-A-T phonics lesson, then try D-O-G and S-U-N.
