Do Plants Really Need Sunlight?

The classic question, done the inquiry way: predict, grow two bean seeds, and discover the answer yourself.

๐ŸŽฏ Learning objectives

After completing this lesson, the child should be able to:

  • Make a prediction and test it with an experiment
  • Discover that plants need sunlight to make their own food
  • Reflect on what surprised you and ask the next question
Here is a secret scientists know: the best way to learn is to ask a question first, then find out for yourself. Today's question is about plants โ€” and you are the scientist!

Instead of telling you "plants need sunlight", let\'s do it the scientist way: ask first, discover second.

1

โ“ Question

What do you think will happen to a plant that does not get any sunlight?

2

๐Ÿ‘€ Observation

Look at the plants near your window. What do you notice? They are green, their leaves point toward the light, and they look strong. Write or draw what you see.

3

๐Ÿ”ฎ Prediction

Make your best guess โ€” scientists call it a hypothesis! Pick one: "I think the plant in the dark willโ€ฆ turn yellow ยท grow even taller ยท look just the same ยท stop growing."

4

๐Ÿงช Exploration

Plant two bean seeds in two cups of soil. Water both cups. Put one cup on a sunny windowsill and the other in a dark cupboard. Water both a little every day for a week. That is your experiment!

5

๐Ÿ” Discovery

After about a week, open the cupboard. What happened? The sunny plant is green and strong. The cupboard plant is pale, yellowish and floppy. Your eyes just answered the question!

6

๐Ÿ’ก Explanation

Plants make their own food using light. It is like a tiny solar-powered kitchen inside every leaf (the grown-up word is photosynthesis). No light means no food โ€” so the dark plant becomes pale and weak.

7

โœ๏ธ Practice

Make it stick: try the Plants & Light Quiz. Then predict: what happens to a plant that gets water but no soil? Guess first, then ask a grown-up to help you test it.

8

๐Ÿชž Reflection

What surprised you? What would happen if we moved the pale plant back to the windowsill โ€” would it recover? That is your next question. Scientists never run out of questions!

๐Ÿงช Materials for this experiment

2 cups ยท soil ยท 2 bean seeds ยท water ยท a sunny windowsill ยท a dark cupboard ยท about one week of patience (the hardest ingredient!)
