For curious minds ages 3–12

📖 Helping with Reading Comprehension

Everything you need to help — without doing it for them.

🎯 What the child needs to learn: The child needs to move from reading words to understanding ideas — the thinking behind the text.

🧭 Simple explanation (for you)

Comprehension is thinking while reading: who, what, where, when, why — then the main idea. Ask questions during and after reading; predictions and retelling are the best practice.

✨ Example: Example: after a story, ask "what was the main idea?" then "how do you know?" — evidence makes comprehension strong.

❓ Questions to ask

  • “What happened?”
  • “Why did the character do that?”
  • “What was the main idea?”
  • “What would you have done?”

💡 Hints (not answers)

  • Ask questions while reading
  • Let the child retell the story
  • Ask for the main idea in one sentence
  • Predict what comes next

🏡 Practice activity

Story retell: after reading, your child tells the story back in three sentences.
